“The
Brain Matters” is the official information website of
the American Academy of Neurology. It is easy to find common neurological
diseases on this site by scrolling up and down its list of common
diseases or going to
“other disorders” if you cannot find what you are looking
for. The link to the National
Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke is particularly
useful. This site is useful also for finding national and local
organizations.
Another valuable resource link is “The
Stroke Center at Hartford Hospital” which
is co-directed by Dr. Silverman. We encourage you
to explore the cutting edge treatments that Hartford
Hospital has to offer in the area of stroke and vascular
neurology.
The Stroke Center at Hartford Hospital
Introduction
The Stroke Center was founded on May 2, 2001 with
the goals of reducing death and disability associated
with stroke. Its core areas are patient
care, clinical and basic science research,
and education of both the lay public and healthcare
professionals. In its first 5 years, the
Stroke Center has developed into southern New England’s
leading Stroke / Neurovascular facility and in
March, 2004, the Stroke Center became the first
Primary Stroke Center program certified by JCAHO
(the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of
Hospital Organizations) in New England. For
a complete listing of our physicians and services,
please refer to the Hartford Hospital website,
and the sections below.
Major Services & Activities:
Acute Stroke Hotline: 1-877-506-1233. This
24/7 access phone number is the link for
outside hospitals that contact the Stroke Center
for patient management and inter-hospital transfers
to Hartford Hospital. Since its inception
in March, 2003, over 600 patients have been transferred
to the Stroke Center for acute care, from 47 hospitals
and clinics throughout New England. Patients
are transferred to Hartford Hospital by either
ground (ambulance) or air (the LifeStar helicopter
service).
Neurovascular Clinic: This weekly clinic, started in October 2002, consists of vascular neurologists, a vascular neurosurgeon, an interventional neuroradiologist, and two nurses. The clinic evaluates outpatients with complex neurovascular diagnoses, such as intracranial aneurysms, vascular malformations, and atypical stroke. It is the only multidisciplinary neurovascular clinic in southern New England. The Clinic phone number for referrals is (860) 545-4100.
Stroke Center Clinical Trials: The Stroke Center is an active participant in clinical trials designed to improve acute stroke clinical outcomes. The Stroke Center has been a national leader in enrollment in several trials, helping to develop novel therapies for the management of both ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage.
Stroke Service: Started in September, 2006, this inpatient service is coordinated by a neurovascular APRN, Donna Avanecean, in concert with Isaac Silverman MD and Joao Gomes MD.
